Benign Breast Biopsy

(Excisional Biopsy)

Excisional biopsy is usually performed as a day case procedure under a general anaesthetic. It may be performed for benign lesions which are causing symptoms, or if there is some uncertainty about the diagnosis. An incision 2-5cm long is usually used and placed in a cosmetic position, either in a skin crease overlying the lesion, or if possible, in a curvilinear incision around the areolar margin. Dissolvable sutures are used. The breast tissue can usually be approximated to avoid any significant deformity. In some cases, if there is excessive scarring or the lesion is large, there may be some minor contour change in the breast or nipple. To maximise healing and cosmesis, it is recommended that adhesive tape or a silicone dressing is applied to the scar for six weeks post-operatively.
